Following on from the 27 all season tire braking shootout, Auto Bild have published their excellent 2018 all season tire test. Testing the best ten 195/65 R15 all season tires from the braking test, Auto Bild have done an incredibly thorough job putting all the tire patterns through the usual array or dry, wet and snow testing.
As with the Auto Bild winter tire test, the excellent German publication have placed a large number of all season tires through wet and dry braking tests in order to find the top ten tires for the full all season tire test, which will include broader wet and dry testing, plus the inclusion of snow running.

The 2018 ADAC all season test has tested nine 175/65 R14 all season tires, with a summer and winter tire as comparison. All eleven tires were put through dry, wet, snow, ice and wear testing, and unusually the hugely successful Michelin CrossClimate finished in last place!
Everyone knows tire performance changes with wear, with the biggest change in tire performance coming from all season and winter tires in snowy and icy conditions.
The drop in performance can be so vast after 4mm that certain countries where "three peak mountain and snowflake" tires are a legal requirement for winter driving, they can lose their legality after 4mm, meaning you only get to use half of your tires tread.
Should this be the case? Michelin have been making alot of noise recently regarding the negative impact of having to scrap a tire with half its tread life remaining, and their arguments are compelling. Not only are you costing the customer more, but you're also causing a much higher negative environmental impact by doubling natural resourse usage and doubling waste.
The 2017 Auto Express all season tire test is a wonderful mix of eight 205/55 R16 all season tires, the Dunlop Sport BluResponse summer tire and the Continental WinterContact TS860 winter tire.
A new feature for 2017 is wet testing at over, and under the magic 7c mark the tire manufacturers recommend we change our tires at.

Then, they've managed to include ten all season patterns, which is more than most all season tire tests manage, but the icing on the cake is the winter tire included for reference is the multiple award winning Continental WinterContact TS 860.

The two all season heavyweights of the industry, the Michelin CrossClimate and the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-2, trade results to tie overall in first place. The UK climate represents a difficult challenge for car tires. Warm enough to require a tire that works well at higher temperatures, but not warm enough to make a summer tire the best choice year round.
Until recently, tires have fallen into three distinct categories: summer, all season and winter tires. Traditionally, all season tires have been developed from a winter tire origins, which give them excellent snow performance but can impact dry and wet performance, especially in the warmer months. This year, Michelin have released the CrossClimate, which if the marketing is to be believed, promises to be a second type of all season tire, one which started life as a summer tire and has been gifted winter capabilities.
Is a summer and winter tire combination the only safe option? Has the second generation Goodyear all season moved the game on? Can the new Michelin CrossClimate live up to the marketing hype? That's what we're here to find out.
