General Grabber A/T3

The Grabber AT3 features three new technologies from General Tire that allow for high grip both on and off-road, enhanced acoustic performance and improved mileage.

The technologies consist of “TracGen”, which includes an open shoulder design, traction ridges which the developers call “traction pockets and sipes arranged at different angles to enhance grip properties.

“DuraGen”, is a rubber compound that provides excellent rip resistance and improves mileage in rough terrain. This combination of design features boost the self-cleaning properties of the tread, permits good interlocking with loose surfaces and provides a large number of edges to deliver grip in every direction.

The third technology, known as “ComfortBalance” demonstrates the developers’ success in overcoming the conflicting interests of ride comfort on road and good off-road grip. The balanced block geometry of the tread with low stiffness and the specially modified arrangement of the blocks in the center of the tread reduce vibration in the tire, providing good ride comfort on the road.

On wet and dry surfaces, the new Grabber AT3 performs at the same high level as its predecessor, while traction on snow has been substantially improved. In off-road use, grip in mud and on wet grass has been improved and the tire presents higher resistance to tread damage than its predecessor.

The Grabber AT3 will be available in 44 sizes for rims between 15 and 20 inches, with an additional 20 LT and C sizes to follow in the spring of 2017. These tires are approved for speeds of up to 150 mph and as an all-season tire, the Grabber AT3 bears the M+S mark and the snowflake symbol to signify safe handling on snow-covered surfaces.

  • General Grabber AT3 proved to be a strong all-round performer and the overall winner for year-round use. Dry performance was decent with average braking distances and stable handling. Wet road behavior was notably good, with safe, predictable handling characteristics and good braking performance despite some weakness in aquaplaning resistance. Snow performance was excellent, nearly matching the best in all test categories. Offroad performance showed some variation - very strong in mud and on dirt tracks, though less impressive on gravel surfaces. Rolling resistance was slightly high at 9.3 kg/t. One of its standout features was refinement - notably quiet at 70.9 dB with very good comfort levels and minimal vibration. This combination of good performance across all conditions with refined road manners made it a compelling overall package.

Questions and Answers for the General Grabber AT3

2017-07-03 - Looking at the test results above how come the "wear" results is so bad ?? If it's a great tire ? Other than that they seem just the job ?

At time of writing, neither of the two reviews of the General Grabber AT3 have given a score for wear, so it isn't that the wear score is bad, it's just that no one has graded it yet.


2018-09-28 - If one had to compare the General Grabber AT3 to the Goodyear HP all Weather, what EU ratings would the Grabber get in terms of Fuel efficiency and road noise. The EU ratings normally indicate a A-H rating for each.

EU label scores depend on size and dot codes. If we don't list all the Grabber AT3 label scores on the main page, then it is best to consult the manufacturers website for the latest information.


2023-07-09 - Good evening Would these be ok for VW campervan. Or would the ride be to harsh.

This looks like the European version of the Grabber APT so should be at the more comfortable end of AT tires. Also check out Firestone Destination AT2 if it's available in your region.


2023-07-13 - What is the depth of the tread on a new grabber AT3 on an 18inch wheel?

It will vary slightly by size but somewhere around 9.5mm / 12/32" is a good bet.

Given 97% while driving a Honda CRV (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 500 average miles
I use these both on and off the road. No really heavy off roading but up a lot of farm tracks and across grass. fields. I had Bridgestone Dueller ht684 but were not impressed with them. As soon as the Grabber AT3 were fitted the car was a lot more responsive, but above all they are a lot quieter and makes for a lot more comfortable ride on the road. I ran the Bridgestone's at 26psi as per the handbook but I run the Grabber's at 36psi as per tire fitter recomendation. I am getting an extra 2-3 mpg since fitting these tires.

I have been driving 4x4 vehicles for at least 25 years and drive off road as paet of my job, construction and forestry. I have mainly used Nissan Navara but a couple of years ago I bought a new Ford Ranger double cab pick up truck, the truck was fitted with Bridgestone all terrain tires and they lasted to 70,000 miles. They were extremely good on road and about average off road.

I recently bought 4 x new General Grabber AT3 tires as I have used them before on one of the Nissan Navaras, but what a disaster they have truned out to be, extremely harsh ride with jolting and axle tramping, and on the poor country roads in my area the truck bounces across the pot holes. I took the truck back to the supplier and asked them to check the pressure, the pressure was actually a couple of psi low so they put them up to the correct pressure and they are even worse.

These are without a doubt the worse tires I have ever bought.

Given 85% while driving a Mercedes Benz ML W164 (255/55 R18) on a combination of roads for 30,000 spirited miles
Awesome tires. Initially for the first 100 miles, they felt very jelly like, however this settled and 30k miles later I am considering another set. They often get used green laning from soft mud around fields to rocky hill climbs in the lake district. The only time getting stuck in deep soft mud where I had to air down. Which is something they're very good for. I have aired down to around 12psi and it had no issues.
When on road, I run them around 34psi for the country roads and frequently enjoy a little spirited drive to astounding results. Chances are, the regular driver would bottle it before the tires give way on tarmac.
With relatively good feedback I feel confident knowing what the car is doing under me.
For longer journeys, I've aired up to around 45psi and have been excellent for motorway blasts. Having a higher speed rating than most A/T tires is a huge bonus.
Due to a poor show of snow the past two years, they haven't had a long chance in deep snow, but they performed very well in what I could find. Testing on a particularly icy single lane steep hill (which proved too much for many others based on holes through the hedges) where it confidently controlled the 2 tonnes down the slope happily.
I've now done around 30k miles and after rotating wheels fairly consistently, they will be coming to the end of the useful life. For me, that's very good going. MLs are renowned for chewing side walls, and this has immediately solved this issue with even wear throughout.
Road noise for me and guests have all commented on how quite they are still and not noticeable the car is running on ATs.

Overall, I would recommend these and will be replacing with the same again.

Great overall tire, obviously ATs are not the best at everything but I found this one to do quite good at almost everything. Only when things get extremely muddy they obviously arent that great.They are really good in fresh powdered snow but horrible on ice. I studded them to increase snow/ice performance which worked quite well. They have been wearing really little on my solid axle 1991 G-Wagon. I did absolutely rip one sidewall though. Would i buy them again? Probably not I think the Falken Wildpeak AT is a overall better especially Winter-Performance wise but these generals are way better than the bfg ko2s in the snow and wet, as they have much more siping.

Given 90% while driving a BMW X5 3.0 diesel (235/65 R17) on mostly country roads for 43,000 spirited miles
These have been absolutely excellent. Numerically most miles generally round town and motorway, but frequent/significant grass, mud and gravel, plus hundreds of miles of snow each year (in the Alps). Also some green laning in Wales! As regards longevity, the 43,000 represents the highest figure I have ever got out of a set of tires, and it is only the fronts which are now on the limit.

Traditionally I have used Goodyear Wrangler AT's and BF Goodrich AT's (and still have a set on an Jeep CJ7 that I also use - it only does a couple of thousand miles a year so they refuse to wear out...). These were significantly more expensive and definitely no better - but they are getting old and of course tire technology is (I hope..) continuously improving each year.

I don't drive hard enough in the dry to know much about dry handling etc., but the AT3's are excellent to drive in the wet. Very good stopping distances etc. From my experience just as good as a good road tire. Noise is not a problem either.

Incredibly good in deep snow (remember the Beast from the East?) and sub zero temperatures - the best I have ever driven.

Traditionally I swap tires winter to summer (off road tires used to be a pain in summer, and I have a second set of rims...) but I have stopped bothering with summers since the last set wore out - with these there seems no point.

Highly recommended. (and no, I am not being paid to say that...)

Ran AT on previous disco 2 and fitted these on Disco 3 when I changed. Great wear done 30k and fronts have about 5mm left rears about 8mm. Good grip until pushed hard then tend to understeer but what can you expect with a near 3ton discovery. Good in muddy grass never failed to be my caravan off a field and it's weighs 2 ton. Does hit the fuel consumption I loose 2-3mpg round town which is only down side the old AT on my disco 2 never made a difference but these are a little bit more aggressive. Will buy again when fronts get a bit lower

Land Rover (225/55 R18 H) on a combination of roads for 3,000 spirited miles
Purchased my P38 2.5 DSE new in May 2000. Factory fitted with Pirelli 60:40 on:off road tires, followed by my fitting 3 sets of Michelin 4x4 Synchrone 60:40s. All gave about 35,000 miles to the 1.6mm UK safety limit markers, over 3 years per set. These all performed ok in our UK annual weather cycles, but did lack snow and ice performance, which was problem for accessing my hillside pony field with the back full of feed, on those rare occasions. Manual labour required ! I then changed to those stylised tread pattern Grabber AT tires, and did not notice any change in MPG as some suggested, while wet grip on asphalt was not quite as keen as previous tires, but acceptable. Performance in snow was only slightly improved over previous tires. I fitted two sets of these which both lasted 48,000 miles to 1.6mm limit markers over 4 years per set. Impressive, considering they were a lot cheaper than my previous brands. Now with over 236,000 miles on the clock, my waggon is fitted with it's first set of Grabber AT3. While practicality is more important to me over appearance, these tires do look the part on my truck. Done 3000 Summer miles, (would have been double if not for Covid-19), with no issues and no measurable wear on the stock 9mm tread depth. Again, no change in MPG. They are definitely better in the wet than the old AT. With the snowflake symbol, I am hoping to report on the suggested 15% improvement in snow and ice performance, even though I wish this type weather to stay away - I hate the stuff ! :)

Volvo (235/65 R17) on a combination of roads for 18,000 spirited miles
Fitted on a volvo xc70. Quite a bit of off road, and in fields towing a trailer with hay. Green lanes and dirt tracks etc on dartmoor. Handled well quiet on roads. I've had grabber 1, 2 and 3 tires on a discovery and xc70 and happy with them

Very soft sidewall, first time out off-roading cut 3 tires down to cord, now need to buy new tires, so I’d say ok for road can get much better for offroad

Given 82% while driving a Land Rover Discovery 4 (225/45 R17) on mostly country roads for 50,000 easy going miles
Whilst these are a good mid range AT tire they are notorious for wearing away the wheel rims at around the 50,000 mileage. This eventually reduces the strength of the rim and can cause hairline cracks and poor tire seal giving slow punctures. Little can be done to rebuild the rims, so you're looking at new rims....very costly!
I won't be using Grabber AT3's again.....

Given 81% while driving a Toyota RAV4 (225/65 R17) on mostly country roads for 42,000 spirited miles
Fitted to a RAV4 these tires have now covered 42k miles, probably around 1k left. At least 10k miles towing a horse box. On road grip is good both wet and dry and they have got me on and off many wet muddy show fields without drama. Will definatly be fitting the same again.
