2023 Summer Tire Market Overview

Every year it becomes harder and harder to argue that the German publication AutoBild aren't leading the tire testing game, and once again they seem to be a huge step ahead of everyone else.

For their 2023 summer tire test, AutoBild have started with fifty 225/45 R18 tires, mostly ultra high performance tires but also some touring bias rubber, and put them through a huge dry and wet braking test.

As always, the real fun will be published in the full review in a few weeks where the top twenty tires from this test will be put through a full examination, but this braking data does give us some interesting insights.

Once again Hankook dominate braking with the Ventus S1 Evo3, with the shortest average and the best performance in the wet, but the updated Pirelli P Zero PZ4 is now pretty close in the wet. The full test will include wear testing, so it will be interesting to see how these two tires perform when run on for a long time.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is again excellent overall, as is the new Continental PremiumContact 7 and Michelin Pilot Sport 5. It's also great to see Yokohama up near the front with the Advan Sport V107, a tire we hope to test later this year.

Test Size: 225/45 R18

If you've scanned down to the results, you should have noticed at least one surprise, that is the Linglong Sport Master finishing seventh overall! Linglong have been quietly improving their products for year, so this isn't a huge surprise, but if it does that well in the full test it will be a huge step forward for the Chinese brand.

Bridgestone might be disappointed with the performance of the new Turanza 6, as will Continental as their tier 2 brand Semperit finished near the end of the field.

Stay tuned for the full test in a few weeks which will really show us how the top twenty tires stack up.
