Avon ZZ5 Reviews - Page 4

Given 86% while driving a Audi 3,0 tdi quattro sport (255/35 R19 W) on a combination of roads for 4,000 average miles
I managed to do 4,000 miles on these tires and from new they were 8mm, and when I sold my car the fronts were down to 7mm and the rears were still on 8mm. This is due to the heavy front end of the diesel and the tires pressure being 41si front and 32 psi rear. Although the car is quattro the fronts do wear slightly more than the rears.

When I first put them on for the first 500 miles they felt a bit woolly but once bedded in they were nice.

The tires look great, nice rim protection, the dry grip is very good and the wet grip has been very good also. Tires are nice and progressive into the corners and they feel very comfortable so I would give them a good 8.5 out of 10. They were £110 each fitted and you simply can not go wrong. It is a nice mid range tire and I would expect 20,000 miles out of these easily.

Given 89% while driving a Mazda MX5 (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 17,000 spirited miles
Just replaced the rears with another pair of ZZ5'S after 17000 miles ( still 5 mm on the fronts)They are a great tire. progressive, good feedback and great grip in the dry. They had been put through their paces here and on a long road trip around Europe including the San Bernadino pass and the San Gotthard pass as well as many other Swiss, French and Italian B roads. On our own UK roads they put up with the potholed roads as well as can be expected. They are fine in the wet but are a little underwhelming when its cold and frosty when they can be a little snappy on the rears.
They are very stable at speed, corner with great grip and feedback changing direction on flowing roads with precision and poise.
When you consider the performance of these tires against many dearer competitors they are superb with excellent performance in all but the worst conditions.

Volkswagen (225/40 R18 W) on mostly country roads for 14,000 spirited miles
Currently on a 240bhp & 500nm@ 1350revs FWD golf. Grip is really good in dry with mega torque @1500 will break and smoke if not careful at low speeds with such high torque however in the wet the grip is predictable and breaking away progressive and does not snatch back like some. For mid price range tire its impressive with 14000 miles between changes on the front but I am not the kindest on tires with the standard Bridgestones and conti sport 3's only seeing me 12000 miles. However it must be noted I don't slow up much in the wet as don't need to with these but the roads are not motorways twisty rough chipped A roads mostly driven.

Tend to wear out middle slightly however need the pressure at 34 as DSG and hevey on front end on second set and really impressed keep looking at new zz7s but cannot decide as these are so good need wet grip as on west coast and its always raining here

Given 89% while driving a Vauxhall Insignia CDTI 160 (225/40 R19) on a combination of roads for 20,000 average miles
I drive a 160hp Vauxhall Insignia and the standard tires are expensive and last 13 - 14000 miles on the front. I replaced these with Avon ZZ5s and I'm really impressed. The grip and handling is very good in wet or dry. They are not noisy either despite being fairly wide low profiles. They are also half the price of the previous tires. So far I have had 20000 miles from the front tires which is excellent. Just getting below 3mm now so I'll need to replace them soon. I will definitely be fitting another set of ZZ5s.

Given 93% while driving a Audi A5 (255/35 R19 W) on a combination of roads for 12,000 easy going miles
I tend to choose my tires by the ratings give by the manufactures and the quieter the better. Less road noise than the dunlops and no more sliding in the wet when entering the slip road. I don't tend to drive to hard any more so the dry grip has been fine for me

Given 47% while driving a Ford 05 Mondeo 185 (modded) diesel (235/40 R18) on mostly town for 7,000 spirited miles
Didn't last too long on the front its ok at the rear. Front ones 3mm left after 3 months and 7000 miles. Handling is terrible on 3mm with no grip when rainy i drive slowly dont feel confident. they were alright when 4mm. Cornering pretty unstable twitchy at times

Given 90% while driving a Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI S Line 140bhp (235/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 150 average miles
After buying tires which would many would class as 'ditch finders' for a while (and coming to realise that cheap tires are a false economy) I decided to give the Avon ZZ5's a whirl after reading good reviews.

I had them fitted about a week ago so they're not anywhere close to being bedded-in properly and as a result I can't comment on how they're going to wear, but I can say that my car (an Audi A4 S-Line) is noticeably smoother and more comfortable than it's ever felt before in the 5 years I've owned it. The grip from these tires in the dry is incredible, so I can corner with confidence. In the wet they felt a little slippery but I'm chalking that down to the tires being brand new so I'm not marking them down for that. The amount of road noise that they transmit through to the cabin is considerably quieter than my previous tires, despite them being low-profile tires on big wheels. I'm seriously impressed!

Would I buy these again? Damn right I would - I recommend you do, too!

Given 100% while driving a SEAT EXEO ST TDI 170CR (225/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 16,000 spirited miles
Brilliant! Best tires I've ever bought. Both wet and dry grip is superb, even now the fronts are down to 3mm. The wear rate is good too. 16k miles from the front set and the rears are still on 6mm. Ive just ordered another two for the front. I do a combination of motorway and country roads (quickly when circumstances allow) in all weathers and I have not had cause to worry about the performance of these Avons at any time. They obviously suit my SEAT Exeo ST TDI 170 CR Sport Tech with its 170 bhp turbo diesel and stiff suspension. AND they are made in the UK! Whats not to like?

Given 97% while driving a Audi A4 2.0 TDI 140 SLine (255/35 R19 W) on a combination of roads for 200 average miles
Fitted ZZ5's all round last week replacing worn Continentals and they transformed the handling of my car. Better grip, lower road noise and a much improved ride. The tire fitter I spoke to recommended Avon saying they were very underrated and for the price I have to agree. Can't comment on the wear rate yet but would happily trade a little for all the benefits I've seen so far plus the fact they are made in the UK.

Given 98% while driving a SEAT Leon Cupra R 275bhp (235/35 R19) on for 0 spirited miles
Got these to replace continentals on my Leon cupra, fantastic tires!
Grip in both wet and dry is outstanding, road feel is better and the price was substantialy less than I expected for a tire of this size and quality, plus in this post brexit era they are British made!

Given 100% while driving a Subaru Legacy 3.0R Spec B (215/55 R17) on a combination of roads for 4,000 average miles
Car feels fantastic on these boots. Too early to comment on wear after only 3 months so no rating given for that.

MG (225/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 8,000 spirited miles
Transformed the wet roadholding and improved traction in the wet (no traction control fitted on this car, less wheelspin encountered/ evident) a superb tire in the dry inspires confidence in the cars capabilities far more than the original Continental fitments.
