With SUV and 4x4 vehicles quickly becoming the most popular vehicle type in Europe, more and more magazines are providing dedicated tire tests for SUV sizes.

This year, Auto Motor und Sport have tested nine SUV tires in the crossover 215/60 R17 size using a VW Mokka.

The Top Three

Goodyear take the top spot with the EfficientGrip SUV. The Goodyear was particularly strong in the dry, with the shortest braking distances, and a solid all round performance with the only weakness highlighted in the aquaplaning tests. The Continental Premium Contact 5 finishes second, with a strong wet performance, but a slightly higher rolling resistance and noise level than the Goodyear, and Michelin finish third with the Primacy 3, with a strong dry braking and a balanced wet performance.

The Rest

While the magazine believe top three tires are the best SUV tires on the market, the fourth, fifth and sixth placed tires were still recommended. The fourth placed Pirelli Scorpion Verde had an extremely sporty feel, with excellent handling, but as a result it was quite a noisy tire with a high rolling resistance, and the fifth placed Falken ZE914 and sixth placed Nokian Line SUV impressed with a general all round balance.

The Toyo Proxes CF2 and Bridgestone Turanza T001 could only manage a "satisfactory" rating, both struggling a little in the wet, and while the budget Linglong GreenMax 4x4 HP scored well in the dry and comfort, it had a high rolling resistance, poor wet grip and an oversteer balance on the limit in the wet, leaving it firmly in last place.
