275/55 20 Tire Review Highlights

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV rated 86% while driving a Ford F 150
Driving on mostly country roads for 30000 spirited miles
I have these tires on an F-150 and also in a 255/55R18 on a Touareg, studded in both applications. They are my go-to tire for the conditions that I drive in, which is snow and/or ice-covered roads, typically in a -30 deg F to 10 deg F (-35 to -12 deg C) temperature range. On dry pavement, they are a notably more squirmy than my summer tires. They also cost me 5% in fuel economy. Braking distances are notably longer than summer tires if driving on dry pavement, but I should note that drive pavement is an exception for my location.

These tires are focused on snow and ice, and suffer a bit in other categories as you might expect.

I have no hesitation to buy the best tire money can buy, and have settled on these. I will note that I think they are no better (maybe slightly worse) then the discontinued Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV. I suspect they reduced studs a bit to improve noise or reduce how much damage they do to roads.

Continental TerrainContact AT rated 79% while driving a Chevrolet silverado 1500
Driving on a combination of roads for 25000 average miles
Continental Terrain Contact AT is a great performing tire on my Silverado. The highlights are incredible wet traction grip and hydroplane resistance, quiet, good handling, decent ride quality. I am so impressed with the wet grip because I rarely see traction control come on with these Continentals. So much better than other tires I've used. I have also driven on loose dirt and gravel without issue. My only complaint about the Continental Terrain Contact AT is tread life but that may not totally be the tires fault. When I had the tires put on I also replaced the shocks. The alignment was off and chewed up some tire life. However, after getting an alignment I am seeing 1/32 of rubber consumed after 5,000 miles so these would not have hit the mileage rating anyway.

Hankook Dynapro AT2 rated 54% while driving a Ford F 150
Driving on mostly town for 58000 average miles
The Hankook Dynapro AT2 are marketed as a all-terrain tire but behave much more like a highway tire. My grip when doing light off road work (mostly loose gravel, pulling a 5000 lb. boat uphill on a steep boat landing) is poor when compared to the grip my Buick Enclave's Michelin Defender LTX's have (while pulling a 2500 lb. boat, a similar load considering the towing capacity of both vehicles).

The MPGs I get and the road noise are very good - but its performance on a variety of terrains, literally what they are marketed to do, is subpar.

Review:
The Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus XL is a versatile all-terrain tire that excels in both on-road and off-road driving conditions. It delivers outstanding traction on various surfaces, including mud, sand, rocks and gravel, while also providing a comfortable and quiet ride on the highway. The tire's durable construction is designed to withstand the rigors of off-road driving, and it comes with a long tread life warranty. Additionally, the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus XL is certified with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) emblem, indicating its exceptional snow performance.

My personal experience with the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus XL has been consistently positive. I have driven on these tires in a variety of conditions, from paved roads to muddy trails, and they have always performed admirably. They provide excellent grip and control, even in challenging situations. I am particularly impressed with their quietness for an all-terrain tire. On the highway, they generate minimal road noise, making for a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. More than 40 000km good to go for another 10000km.

Overall, the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus XL is an excellent choice for drivers who demand a tire that can handle both on-road and off-road adventures. Its balanced performance, durability, and quietness make it a standout among all-terrain tires. If you're looking for a tire that can tackle anything you throw at it, the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus XL is a worthy consideration.

Davanti Terratoura AT rated 80% while driving a Land Rover All new Discovery
Driving on a combination of roads for 15000 spirited miles
These were bought to replace the factory fitted Pirelli 255/55/20 that came on the car. They are noticably louder than the Pirelli tires, but that was expected as they are a true AT tire. Benn on the car for 15,000 miles now with a full range of town, country and motorway miles, mixed with offroad use as well. They handle as well as the Pirellis and are far better in the wet. Managed to get some use in the snow and ice this year with them and they did not disappoint, feeling very sure footed. This was the same on a muddy hillside field, with seemingly endless grip. After 15k miles, tires are down to 7.5mm on the front and 7.8mm on the back, so would expect to see a total of 35k miles before they will need replacing. Overall, a great tire and better than some of the known AT brands

Yokohama Geolandar AT G015 rated 100% while driving a Chevrolet Tahoe
Driving on a combination of roads for 7000 spirited miles
These tires are utterly amazing. I have the LT 10 ply rated tires on my Chevy Tahoe and they actually ride quieter and smoother than the 6 ply passenger tires I replaced them with. I use my SUV both on road and off on gravel roads to and from my cabin. These tires provide the grip and strength I need on gravel and the smooth ride on pavement. You won’t find a better LT tire for an SUV if you value strength with superior road manners.

Continental VikingContact 7 rated 88% while driving a Chevrolet silverado 1500
Driving on mostly motorways for 8000 average miles
Have had these on my truck for 2 years now. Amazingly quiet, great ice/dry grip. No issues with wet grip at all so far. Only thing to note is tire wear. If you have a decent amount of dry/warmer driving these will wear (like any good winter tire) quite quick. Having to have winter tired on from Oct 1 to Apr 30 in the parts of BC i travel through yearly means i do a decent amount of dry/warmish driving. In 2 seasons i have lost 3-3.5/32nds of tread depth out of a starting 10/32nds. Also note my truck is quite heavy and that can only add to the wear (curb weight of 5300 lbs).
