2024 Studded Tire Test
7th of 8 tires
  • The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 friction tire proved that non-studded tires can match studded ones in many winter conditions, particularly on rough ice and snow. Its soft compound gives understeery handling and excels in comfort with low noise and rolling resistance. Main weaknesses are wet grip and early aquaplaning.

The Best Studded / Friction Winter Tires for 2024
4th of 17 tires
  • The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5, a Nordic non-studded tire, showed improved performance in wet conditions compared to previous years while maintaining strong ice and snow capabilities. It demonstrated good stability and comfort on the road. However, the tire had relatively high rolling resistance, which negatively impacted its fuel efficiency. Despite this drawback, its overall performance, especially in winter conditions, was commendable.

2024 Nordic Friction Winter Tire Test
3rd of 8 tires
  • The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 took third place, dominating the winter conditions alongside Continental. It excelled in both ice and snow performance, offering the best cornering grip and proving particularly enjoyable to drive in winter conditions. However, its clear focus on winter performance led to compromises elsewhere - it struggled with aquaplaning resistance and showed only average performance on dry and wet tarmac, with slightly inconsistent steering feel.

Top 3 Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 Reviews

Given 93% while driving a Volvo V60 T6 AWD (205/60 R16) on a combination of roads for 150 average miles
I live in middle-part of Sweden where the weather can be up and down. from practically rainy roads, to dry and out of nowhere snow&ice roads due to weather changes. I went from Studded tires(been using those for 12years now and wanted to switch up and see how it felt to use studless and am I amazed how far the it come? it's just magnificent, less road noise due to not studded but wow the performance is just unpeccable. They saying wet grip is not that good-okey-ish but for me they have been great, snow & ice is just as we all know .."they are hakka" for a reason.

These are incredible tires!! Dead quiet smooth ride, incredible snow handling, and Ice as well. Winters are tough here in Maine...but I am TOTALLY confident with these for my Toyota Highlander!! Like having a luxury tire ride, that also effortlessly handles winter weather! Highly recommended!

Given 97% while driving a Mercedes Benz C220 CDI Estate (225/50 R17) on a combination of roads for 500 spirited miles
Fantastic on ice and snow. Communicative, responsive, fun and lots of grip. The comfort level on ice and snow is superb. On dry roads the comfort is good but maybe not superb (have been driving quite little on dry roads with R5s)

Given 82% while driving a BMW M3 (275/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 1,500 spirited miles
Rear wheel drive BMW. Staggered Wheel set up. 1000mi. Chicago winter. At highway speeds in the dry (we’ll say over 80mph @ 40°f) it’s down right scary. I don’t feel like I get good traction and the car wanders a bit. At wide curves in the dry, the traction control light comes on and then when I straighten out the LSD kicks in and it has a lateral jolt. Oh, and when there’s strong winds… white knuckling it all the way to work. I took the car back to the shop because I thought it might be tire rub but they said everything was clean and then rebalanced. It’s been quite a winter this year-seemingly every winter scenario imaginable So that being said, in city driving with 4-5 in of snow @ -15° to 20°f under 45mph the tires are simply AMAZING! Remember, this is a rear wheel drive, very “torquey” car. Slush and cold rain it handled well. I might be so bold to say the tires handled better at 20° than at 40°f. The only winters I have to compare it with are Pirelli Sotozero 3, which handled great on the highway but not in the slush or snow. I truly wanted to love this tire particularly since they were really hard to come by in my area but on the highway it falls short.
