  • Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 dominated winter performance, particularly strong in corners on both ice and snow. The steering is responsive with an active rear end that helps turning, though this might not suit drivers wanting ultimate stability. Its weaknesses showed on wet roads with longer braking distances and early aquaplaning, plus reduced straight-line stability on dry roads.

The Best Studded / Friction Winter Tires for 2024
2nd of 17 tires
  • The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10, a studded tire, offered excellent ice and snow grip and improved wet performance compared to previous models. It showed strong stability and performed well in the moose test. However, its major drawback was very high rolling resistance, which significantly impacted its fuel efficiency and lowered its overall score. The tire also produced more noise compared to non-studded options.

2023 Studded Tire Test

  • The Finnish winter specialist scores many points for its high level of grip on ice. It is also the best at handling slippery curves on both snow and ice without losing its course. A lightly oversteering rear end helps to rotate the car around corners. This makes the tire somewhat prone to skidding under pressure, but it remains easy to control at the grip limit.
Its willingness to turn continues on asphalt rounds. However, its wet grip lags behind the best, and the steering feel on dry roads is nonlinear in character.
Nokian is suitable for those looking for the best possible winter grip on snow and ice and who appreciate the joy of driving on curvy roads.
A high baseline performance with peak winter features results in an overall test victory.

Top 3 Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 Reviews

Given 76% while driving a Honda Civic 1.8 (/65 R15) on mostly country roads for 2,000 easy going miles
Here in the states, outlets like Consumer Reports would have us believe that premium studless winter tires have reached parity with studded Nordic winters. At least in the case of the Hakkapeliitta 10, this is absolutely not true. I've have the chance to directly compare these tires to lightly worn sets of the Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 and the Continental Vikingcontact 7. In deep snow the difference is significant. But on hard packed snow and ice the Hakkas are massively better. I can't speak to the dry/wet traction or handling as my tires will spend 90% of their life on dirt roads and snow. Noise is still a significant problem with the Hakka 10. In my poorly insulated Honda Civic, the constant racket is intrusive at all speeds on pavement. For this reason, I would not recommend these tires in any case where the car spends most of its time on paved roads. They are an absolute godsend for anyone who drives a 2wd car through the remote northern parts of the American west. I will update this review regarding wear at a later date.

Given 82% while driving a Jaguar XJ (X351) LWB 5.0L Supercharged (245/40 R20) on a combination of roads for 10,000 easy going miles
Nokian Hakka 10 is an exceptional tire in the worst winter conditions. Exceptional ice cornering, braking and acceleration. Quietest studded tire I have had to date. Tires still measure at 9/32nds after 10,000 kms of winter use. Only complaint is the tire gives you very little feedback on dry/wet conditions

Given 89% while driving a Hyundai I30N (225/40 R18) on a combination of roads for 11,000 average miles
Echoing other people’s reviews, these tires are phenomenal in harsh winter conditions, to the point where it almost feels like driving in summer. If you’re in the market for winter tires that will laugh at demanding conditions, keep you safe and handle as if there’s no ice or snow at all, buy these. Winter driving is a piece of cake with these tires. My hot hatch is again fun to drive for the cold 6 months of the year up here in the north.

The only downsides are the road noise and wet braking. The noise, which, for a studded tire, is not exceptionally worse than average, but it’s still hard to ignore the noise on asphalt. The wet braking on asphalt is not perfect and far from being “bad”; just something to keep in mind. Definitely buying these again, but I don’t know when that will be as the wear has been almost non-existent!

Given 66% while driving a Mazda 6 Wagon (225/55 R17) on mostly country roads for 10,000 average miles
TLDR: perfomance decline after just 2 seasons!

Driving in Finland, I bought a set of these based on the stellar reviews. For 2 seasons it was great. Especially in the snow and on white ice. Black ice performance was ok, but not great. Average in the dry and wet (to be expected).
During the 3rd season the performance declined significantly. I got stuck in downtown Helsinki on a snowy icy patch of tarmac while parking, other cars(regular 2wd) left the same spot even on studless tires without issues. Even the slightest icing / slush on the roads were too much. I lost confidence in the tire, I reported it to Nokian and they took the tires for inspection after the 3rd season. Without doing any tests they sent it back and said it was all ok. Never buying a Nokian again, it seems the lifetime of these tires is 2 seasons, even when there is plenty of tread remaining.

Absolutely the best snow and ice tires i have ever used.
I always want aggressive snow tires in the winter living in the mountains of western Washington no matter what vehicle I drive.
These hakkapeliitta 10 tires amaze me whenever we get snow. My Hyundai Elantra is fwd and sits pretty low to the ground. As long as my tires can touch the ground they really kick ass. Only problem I've ever had was trying to drive in 2 feet of fresh snow before anyone else was driving in it or being plowed. My car was to low for that much snow but i did make it out of driveway and around the block but i didn't dare stop until I got back in my driveway because i was on top of snow and my tires were spinning a bit to keep the momentum. Once some traffic had packed in down a bit i was great to go.
I love love love these tires.
I also bought a brand new set for our 2018 Mazda cx5 awd and Acura Mdx sh-awd. I'm excited and impatiently waiting for snow to put them to the test with our awd vehicle's.
