Wanli S1088 Reviews - Page 5

Given 70% while driving a Subaru wrx turbo (225/45 R17) on mostly town for 2,000 spirited miles
I have had 4 of these fitted to my WRX for over a year now, they grip just fine in the dry, in the wet they are ample for driving within the speed limits. Wear wise, they are still very fresh (circa 6k so far), noise could be improved a little. They are definitely a step up over their previous incarnations which seemed to be made of roller boot plastic. I am surprised at the comments stating lethal, dangerous etc.

Given 10% while driving a Citroën C1 (225/45 R17 V) on a combination of roads for 1,000 easy going miles
You want to trust your life with these tires read the reviws of an independent magazine. Pray you dont have to hit the brakes in the wet. Or the guy behind you has them on his car

While Maxxis showed promise, it’s not happy on wet roads. Chinese maker Wanli is way behind its rivals – you hope the car behind you on a busy, wet motorway is not on the S-1088.

The Goodyear’s problems were nothing compared to the Wanli, though, which yet again brought up the rear, a long way off the standard set by the rest. It took more than five metres longer to stop – a car’s length. That means when a vehicle with the Conti rubber has come to a halt, one wearing the Wanlis will still be doing 20mph-plus.

A long way back was the Wanli. This was not a pleasant drive, with the sheer dearth of grip triggering the anti-lock braking very early and pushing the car wide as soon as the throttle was touched. Wanli was four seconds slower than the next best make, and a worrying seven seconds behind the top tire on the handling circuit.

Given 97% while driving a Vauxhall Meriva (205/50 R16 W) on a combination of roads for 1,000 easy going miles
I bought these tires to replace Dunlops and GT Radial tires fitted to my Meriva. So far these tires have been faultless in wet and dry conditions. Have not experienced any sliding about in any road condition. The only complaint is tire noise which only happens at approx 40mp and on certain road surfaces. Have had Conitnental tires in the past and had same tire noise with them regardless of speed. I was a bit concerned after I had bought these tires and then read the reviews about poor grip in the dry and wet etc. However no problems so far

Given 83% while driving a Cadillac STS (225/45 R17) on mostly town for 80,000 easy going miles
2006 Cadillac STS V6. Wife had to buy new tires while visiting parents christmas. Rear tires are Bridgestone, front tires are WanLi S1088. She told me this on the phone, I had never heard of WanLi tires so I went to the reviews. I told her she had to be extremely careful driving home because of the wet friction being low. Read some of the reviews to her. She drives home in the rain, had no problem. I just test drove the car in heavy rain, puddles, etc. HARD stops and HARD turns in a parking lot. I tried to skid the car 50+ mph, snatch the steering with brakes. PERFECT traction. FANTASTIC tires. Reviews are worthless. Propaganda, willful B.S. The cheap tire is the Bridgestone on the rear, which she paid $50.00 more per tire.

Given 50% while driving a Mercedes Benz slk320 (245/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 150 spirited miles
Fitted a pair of these to the rear of my RWD slk (I had conti's on previously), in the first 15 miles I encountered damp conditions the back end was all over the place, but once they broke in > 100 miles they were fine in the wet. Ride is not smooth, tramlining is bit of a problem. Got what I paid for but wouldn't buy again as ruining the usual comfortable ride I get from the merc - will go back to premium tires.

Given 61% while driving a BMW 130i M (225/40 R18) on mostly motorways for 8,000 average miles
Fitted these tires all round to a BMW 130i. In the dry they are very good tires, with a unreal amount of grip.
On the motorway in a straight line, they are good at dispersing water and good under braking.
If your in a hurry on a wet B road. I have never seen such a contrast in tires from dry to wet, its like you've got slicks on. Traction control always fighting the back end all the time, even on light acceleration. Oblivious you become impatient and turn of the DTC. Warning be awake as I had the car sideways in a straight line.

Given 27% while driving a Lotus Elise (195/50 R16) on a combination of roads for 10,000 spirited miles
quite good in the dry, not very progressive on the breakaway but not too bad...GOD HELP YOU if it starts to rain though, utterly dangerous, terrifying and frankly a death trap. that is all.

Given 84% while driving a Citroën C4 (205/50 R17 W) on mostly motorways for 20,000 spirited miles
I too was somewhat apprehensive about fitting these to my C4 Coupe however, after the initial running in period, they are performing faultlessly.
As has been mentioned here, the first few miles were "interesting" in the wet but once the break in had finished, they're fine, especially at the money. I drive best part of 20k a year and have used various brands...
