2022 AZ SUV Tire Test

  • With a top value for rolling resistance, the Continental Eco Contact 6 confirmed its label efficiency rating in seventh place. Grippy in the wet, but significant aquaplaning weaknesses.

2022 ViBilagare Eco vs Normal Tire Test
8th of 10 tires
  • Low consumption. Good comfort.
  • Poor wet grip. Extended braking distances. Slow steering reaction.
  • While the sibling PremiumContact 6 becomes test winner, the EcoContact 6 finishes further down the field. The wet grip leaves a lot to be desired and often it is the rear that releases the grip first with an unwelcome slide. The stopping distance on wet roads is well over four meters longer than PremiumContact 6 at 80 km/h – a difference that grows significantly at higher speeds. With relatively low tread depth – 6.7 mm new – it aquaplanes early.
In the dry the EcoContact 6 does not perform particularly well, it is a bit slow to react to steering input and change course. However, the high-speed stability is good.
The Continental EcoContact 6 has the lowest consumption in the test and comfort s very high. But that cannot justify a buy.

Questions and Answers for the Continental EcoContact 6

2019-04-04 - What is your opinion on Continental EcoContact 6 in compare to Continental Premium Contact 6? I need advice for 205/55/16 Kia Ceed '07.

This video should help you

2020-03-24 - Is this a run-flat

The Continental EcoContact 6 comes in various runflat sizes.

2020-05-21 - Is Continental ecocontact 6 made in Slovakia?

It is likely the Eco Contact 6 is made in multiple factories depending on size.

2023-06-14 - Are these run flat, can they be repaired if punctured by a nail?

If there are runflat versions of the EC6 they will be listed as SSR (Self Supporting Runflat) by the dealer. Generally these can be repaired using the same rules as regular tires, a small hole in the centre 75% part of the tread and the tire has not been run on flat means it can be repaired.

2024-02-05 - I have a BMW 218i Gran Coupe which was fitted with Continental Ecocontact 6s from new. Reviews of these tires are not very encouraging and I am nervous of their performance in potential aquaplaning conditions. When it comes time to replace them does it make sense to fit the best possible tires such as UUHP tires as, whilst I won’t do any track days, will a better tire help me in potentially dangerous situations. Would you have a recommendation as to the best possible tire for my car which I might have remapped at some stage. Regards Andrew

Something like the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 or Michelin Pilot Sport 5 might be a good choice if you plan to up the power, other wide a premium touring tire is also worth considering. All will have better wet performance than a low rolling resistance tire like the EcoContact 6.

Given 10% while driving a Volkswagen Golf 7 TDI (205/55 R16 V) on a combination of roads for 14 average miles
I bought a pair of these for the front of my car and drove them approximately 14 miles home today. I have measured the tread depths and found them to be approximately 6.5 mm. The Continental Premium Contact 5 which were removed had done about 28000 miles and had worn down to approximately 3 to 4 mm. These tires were original equipment on the car and I am pretty sure the tread depths were of the order of 8 mm when they were new. When I have bought quality tires in the past, they have generally had around 8 mm of tread. If the tires wear at the same rate, it appears I will have to replace them at a much lower mileage. It is possible that the new tires will wear at a considerably reduced rate. However, I am sceptical and suspect that I will have to replace then at rather less than 28000 miles.
Are manufacturer's quietly reducing the life of their tires for commercial reasons?
This practice is surely environmentally unsound. More used tire casings will be produced for a given vehicle mileage. Greater stress should be placed on tread depth (and longevity) of tires when they are advertised new. Perhaps a statement of the tread depth in the description should be legally required. This would help to sort out the tendency of tire manufacturers toward selling tires of reduced tread depth.
I will try and add a further review when I have had the tires for a bit longer.

Given 71% while driving a Opel Astra K 1.6 CDTI (205/55 R16 V) on a combination of roads for 6,000 average miles
I have this on my car since march this year and after aprox. 9000km they have 1mm wear (from 6.5 when they come in new to 5.5 this week). I drove around 1300km straight (prague-bucharest) in 15h and they felt stable at 200km/h on highway. I would not buy again because of the low profile (6.5mm new).

Given 80% while driving a Toyota Prius (195/65 R15) on mostly motorways for 0 average miles
Comfort high ,price is ok,Aquaplaning good, handling wet and dry good, negative is tread life, they have A fuel consumption and wet grip, and "sacrifice" tread life of the tire, overall is a good tire.

Given 67% while driving a Toyota Yaris (195/55 R16) on mostly town for 15,000 average miles
While they have good grip on dry and wet and good fuel consumption, wear is poor. Despite rotation the front is now after less than 15000 miles down to 3mm and back 4mm. Also, one of the tire has a split on the side (I have rather gently hit the kerb but the split is on the opposite side with no sign of external contact at this point) so I need to replace them. As they were fitted to a new car I have not checked the initial tread high, but if indeed it is only 6.5 - this is another reason to avoid them. I suppose, if the initial tread was as on other tires, they would not wear so quickly.

Given 41% while driving a Mercedes Benz A180 W177 (225/45 R18) on mostly town for 7,000 easy going miles
Fitted as standard on my wife’s a180, not exactly a powerhouse of a car, the traction is really not great and the wet grip is awful. Swapping from my son’s Clio on Michelin cross climate with similar mileage is like night and day. Mercedes is great car spoiled by these awful tires.

Given 50% while driving a Mercedes Benz CLC 180 Kompressor Sport (225/45 R17) on mostly town for 15,000 spirited miles
Dry grip is below average traction off line is the worst(0 out of 10), can't stop spinning wheels, wet grip is poor don't drive when raining I found my self sideways many times, Comfort is good in a perfect road however it makes you feel every imperfections in the road. Feedback is very good, response delay is well. Wear is very slow, they will go at least 40k kms. About 5 mm at 25k kms. When new they were around 6mms. Fuel efficiency best 10 out of 10, but tires spin quick:( I don't recommend this tire unless it's are free.

The EcoContact 6 are the original tires came with our 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB 300.

Nice tires for all around daily usage, quiet and comfort.

Unfortunately, tires must be replaced after 18 months and 18000km of home-school-supermarket usage.

Not recommended for extremely poor mileage.

Given 42% while driving a Nissan Qashqai (235/50 R19) on mostly town for 4,600 easy going miles
Hi everyone, firstly I'm 68, I want mpg not mph. Im telling you the whole truth here, no lies, its not my style to lie. In March I bought a new Qashqai epower, it came with Continental eco6 on as standard tires. First impression, only 6.4mm of tread brand new, are they serious? Surely they'll wear quicker than an 8mm treaded tire,,,,yep, they have. Listen, I drive with the lightest foot going, I'm getting over 55mpg over the period I got it (1st March 2024) it's done 4628 miles now. I just checked my front tire tread depth,,,4.7mm, I swear, I couldn't believe it. Back are 5.4mm.
So, mpg is brilliant, tire wear is diabolical on the heavier epower qashqai. Dry handling is ok but wet handling isn't, it'll move sideways on wet corners, it's a bit scary.
Noise level is very good inside the car.
I'm going to change these soon, before Winter, I live in Aberdeen, it's cold in Winter, I can't trust these things. Looking at : Goodyear 4 seasons Gen3 , hopefully with 8mm of tread on.
I'd never recommend these Conti Eco6 to anyone, Continental are taking the proverbial with only 6.4mm of tread from new.
Steve.

Given 39% while driving a BMW 218i (205/55 R17) on mostly country roads for 500 average miles
NB the new tread depth on these is only 6.5 mm - (the normal is 8-9MM). In my case after less than 500 gentle miles all 4 tires were down to 4.2mm after 3 months ie 47% worn having already lost 35% of potential wear. I also had a bulge without hitting any kerb or pothole. Continental told me they were designed that way and would save me fuel-MOT requires 3 mm of tread. avoid like the plague is my advice.

The UK mot does not require 3mm of tread to pass, and tire wear is always high for the first 1000 miles however this does seem like unusually high wear and light he worth getting the car alignment checked too, though this tire pattern does seem to have mixed results in real world wear.
Given 50% while driving a BMW X1 23d Xdrive (245/40 R20) on a combination of roads for 0 average miles
Have these fitted from stock on BMW x1 and after travelling 15700 miles/ 19 months the front are down to 2mm and back 4mm. They grip but rain and wet found them lacking and will be changing all 4 this week as a result. Deeply disappointed in them and why fitted from factory I will never understand but that’s what they used. I am in my 50’s and don’t race or power the car hard so I hope this honest appraisal of theses tires makes buyer aware and look a little closer at alternatives as I am having to do this now.

Given 87% while driving a Suzuki SX4 Scross 1.4T Boosterjet (215/55 R17) on a combination of roads for 6,000 spirited miles
These tires came on my new Suzuki S-Cross (AWD.) I was very happy with them until I tore the sidewall on one of them after 10k km. They are great on asphalt, and very quiet; I drive fast and aggressively and they never let me down, no slipping, no aquaplaning, nothing negative to comment. However, they are not good if you habitually drive on gravel or any terrain with slightly sharper stones. Since I do that very often, I'm now getting five AT tires which will hopefully last much longer (though fuel consumption and noise will be much worse than with the Conti's).

Given 76% while driving a MINI MINI COUNTRYMAN S ALL4 (225/45 R19) on a combination of roads for 300 spirited miles
This tire is Eco Contact 6 SSR BMW labelled which is OE tire for MINI countryman cooper S ALL 4 sell in China.
According to my oberservation, the treadwear is 440 and the traction is AA which is different to the non brand-labelled tire or other brand proved tire.BMW or MINI may customize of this tire with Continental and improved the traction, handling and reduced wear.

This tire has good handling in urban and mountain tarmac in Beijing. The support in curves is good and not easy to make some noise to remind driver so this tire can support the spirited driving although it is not belongs to the sports tire at all.I think the Premium Contact 6 is placed at higher level than this.

I gave the lower mark on noise. This runflat tire is likely to produce more noise than others like PZ4 RSC for BMW X5 21 inch wheel.(The countryman has poorer level of NVH)

I may buy the UHP non-runflat tire for Countryman to increase its sportiness and reduce the rolling noise.

Given 36% while driving a Mercedes Benz E Class (275/35 R20) on a combination of roads for 1,200 spirited miles
By far the worst tire I drove in the last 10 years.
Noise and ride comfort are all right.
Grip in dry is ok if you take it slow but as soon as you speed up in corners, the tire struggles to keep you on the road.
Wet grip and wet breaking are the worst I’ve ever experienced in my life. At first I could not believe the car would drift sideways that easy at normal acceleration on a wet road, figured that that part of tarmac must have been greasy or something. Then tried the same on 4-5 diferent places and realized just how bad and dangerous this tire is.
Wet breaking - ABS kicking in on maximum breaking at 30 km/h !?!
After driving it on 3 different occasions / days on wet roads, decided to get rid of the tire after only 2.000 km I drove it.
I cannot believe such a terrible and dangerous tire is used as an OEM and delivered as a first set you get on the car which costs over 100.000 €.
I understand it reduces CO2, but safety must be more important that CO2.
Absolutely terrible.
