Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tire tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

This tire is comfortable and quiet, and offers commendable wet braking and handling. The testers felt its dry handling lacked the sportiness of the leaders, but the Hankook’s low rolling resistance and high comfort make it a pleasant everyday option.

The Hankook Ventus S1 evo³ offers a comfortable and quiet ride with good handling characteristics, making it a balanced choice with a slightly sportier feel. While it performs well overall, it's not the best choice if fuel economy is your main concern.
5th/8

Summary

The Hankook Ventus S1 evo3, previously a winner, performed well but couldn't match the top performers in this test. Its strongest results were in wet conditions, ranking third in wet braking and straight-line aquaplaning. However, it struggled in wet cornering and handling. In dry conditions, the tire showed decent performance, with good braking and mid-table handling results. While lacking the outright grip of the best tires, it demonstrated good feel, balance, and predictability in both wet and dry conditions. The tire also showed strong refinement with low cabin noise and good bump absorption. Its fuel economy was decent, contributing to a solid overall performance.

Results

The Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 achieved an overall score of 99.3%, priced at £99.16. In wet conditions, it ranked 3rd in wet braking (99.10%) and straight aquaplaning (98.20%), but struggled in wet cornering (8th, 97.40%) and handling (6th, 98.30%). It performed better in curved aquaplaning, ranking 6th (86.80%). Dry performance was mid-range, with 4th in dry braking (97.60%) and 5th in dry handling (98.60%). The tire ranked 6th in cabin noise (94.0%) and 4th in rolling resistance (92.50%).

Anyone knows, if this tire will come at 255/55R19 size? So far I can't find it at that size.

It is likely the SUV version of the EVO 3 will be produced in this size soon.

Does the ventus S1 evo3 k127 have the rim protection?

In the sizes I've tested it does not, however I expect it to have rim protection in certain large wheel sizes.
December 26, 2021

depth of tire pattern?

The Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 usually starts around 7.8mm, though there can be variation depending on tire size.
January 29, 2022

Already been answered but have any of there evo 3 k127s have rim protection as of 2022? And are these tires rated as XL tires?

Rim protection varies by size, as does the XL rating. Your tire retailer should be able to help tell you which is XL.

Hello my car is with 245/45/18 and I’m thinking what to buy normal evo 3 C/A/72 or evo with * for bmw and A/A/70 my car is Citroen c5 2012 is not bmw but this stats is better

In your case I would stick with the aftermarket version of the tire, the * marked version of the evo3 will be tuned to work with the BMW platform, and even if the label doesn't show a reduction in wet grip for braking, it is likely to be worse in wet handling.
September 14, 2024

I am shopping for tires for a BMW 530i M sport, the sizes are 275/40/18 and 245/45/18 These are available in both the BMW (*) version --Run-Flat-- OR normal flavor, non run-flat, without the BMW (*) Should I avoid the run-flat meaning that I also forgo the BMW (*)?

Many people enjoy moving away from runflat tires, but it really is a personal choice. Generally non-* tires offer better wet grip so I wouldn't sweat that.

Review Summary

Based on 65 user reviews

Most drivers rate the Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 highly, praising its excellent wet braking and very solid dry grip alongside a quiet, comfortable ride and strong value for money. Many note predictable, confidence-inspiring behavior and, for a good number of users, respectable tread life. The main drawback is a soft sidewall feel that limits steering precision and sporty feedback, so it suits grand-touring comfort more than hardcore performance. A minority report faster wear on certain fitments (notably some EV/OEM/runflat applications).

Strengths
  • Wet grip and braking
  • Dry grip
  • Ride comfort and low noise
  • Value for money
  • Predictable/progressive handling
  • Tread life/durability for many users
Areas for Improvement
  • Vague steering feel/soft sidewalls
  • Faster wear for some owners on specific fitments

Very good in wet conditions. Grip levels are ok in the dry but very safe feel when pushing hard. Noise and comfort very good. No signs of wear so far. Great allrounder, will try on trak i hope.

Given 51% while driving a Tesla Model Y Long Range (225/45 R19) on mostly motorways for 20,000 average miles
These Hankook tires came with my Model Y. On 3 separate occasions the outer part of the tire has delaminated from the inner part causing a bubble in the tire. This leads to severe vibration so it is pretty obvious. Only solution is to replace the tire, which I've now done 3 times. In Scotland we have a lot of rough roads and pot holes so maybe that's why but I have never had this with any other vehicle or tire. Also, comfort I find to be awful. Compared to the Pirelli winter tires that I fit seasonally the Hankook is very harsh and uncomfortable over rough road surfaces. I'd steer clear unless you live in mainland Europe where there are no potholes.

Decent, comfortable tires for a loaded campervan. The tires have lasted about 17-20k miles, which is amazingly good for a VW transporter. They are quiet, surefooted and not in the least noisy.

Initial Impressions Review
Given 70% while driving a Volvo XC60 (255/45 R20) on for 4,733 miles
Fitted Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 in 255/45 R20 on my 2022 Volvo XC60 B5. Driving is mostly normal mixed use (suburban and motorway), including plenty of wet-weather commuting.

The standout is wet grip and confidence. In heavy rain the tires feel secure and predictable, with strong braking and good traction, and they deal with standing water better than I expected. Dry grip is also strong, with stable braking and cornering for an SUV.

Compared with the original OEM Michelin Primacy 4 (VOL), which were solid all-rounders, the Hankooks deliver noticeably better grip (especially in the wet), relatively low road noise (with some noise on uneven surfaces), and are just as comfortable day-to-day. Steering feel and feedback are a bit muted (more secure than “sharp”), but they’re progressive and never feel nervous. Though I note they are much better then the Primacy 4 was.

Value has been exceptional: they were around 60% cheaper than replacing with the Primacy 4 (VOL), despite performing at a level above many tires that cost more.

On wear, I’m tracking tread depth and so far it looks reasonable. Over 7,617 km the tires have gone from about 6.75 mm average at fitment to about 6.0–6.2 mm, with fairly even wear across the tread and only a small inside-edge bias (around 0.1–0.15 mm), I estimate I will get about 42,000-45,000km from them which is great value. I rotated them at around 6,800 km. For context, I achieved ~55,000 km from the OE Michelins before replacement (down to just under 3 mm).

Overall, I’d recommend these for a family SUV or sedan without hesitation. I’m not sure they’re the best choice if you prioritise maximum steering feel in a more sports-oriented vehicle, but for real-world use they’re an easy buy. I’d happily purchase them again, and would have no hesitation trying the new Hankook Evo next time.

Given 57% while driving a Ford Mustang gt (275/40 R19) on mostly country roads for 7,570 average miles
No real issues with these tires except that rear tires worn to indicators in less than 6000 miles! Surprised me ! Worn in the middle due to over inflation from the tire fitting company I used, set the tires to 36 psi cold even though the sticker says 32! I left the tires at 36 thinking they knew what pressure works best for said tire on said vehicle but obviously not! Trying another brand now and will make sure different tire company sets to 32.

Given 79% while driving a BMW i4 e40 (255/40 R19) on a combination of roads for 14,000 spirited miles
These came with my BMW i4 e40 RWD.
Not really a performance tire but does the job.
Dry grip is very good, wet grip is somehow average/decent.
Im on 22.000km mark. I pressume they will last max 30.000km or so.
For this price, they are Okish for an EV.
For me, they are far below Michelin PS4S.

Given 80% while driving a Volkswagen Passat B8 1.8 TSI RLine 180PS (235/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 2,500 average miles
I fitted a set of 2 Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 and driven for 2500mi, I also have Goodyear F1 Asy6 on the rear axle so I'll make some references to that tire too.

Pros:
Braking both in the wet and dry
Comfort both for noise and bumps, very comfortable for a sporty tire, much more so than the asy6
Wet grip is very good.

Cons:
Aquaplaning even when brand new, the Asy6 is far superior on that
Not much feedback
They took some miles to gain their full grip, almost 2000.

I would buy again, it's a wierdly pleasant combination a comfortable tire with sports tire levels of wet grip however the aquaplaning performance needs to improve, be aware of that.

Given 63% while driving a Audi A4 Avant Quattro 252 bhp S Line Sport (8W/B9) (245/35 R19) on mostly country roads for 25,000 average miles
Good tire, the grip is good in all conditions (except in winter on snow because I haven’t tested that). I’m quite dissatisfied because the tire that came as the stock first installation on the Audi A4 45 TDI, 3.0 is unusually worn, where the inner edge is abnormally worn out. From the outside it’s not visible how much the tire wore down on the inside until it became unusable. I don’t know if the tire has such characteristics that it’s soft and that’s the reason, or if I drove with too low pressure (to be fair, I didn’t check the pressure very often), but the wear pattern is quite strange. With another set of tires (different manufacturer and different dimensions) I didn’t have such problems. As a tire itself, it’s okay.

Given 82% while driving a Kia Motors Stinger 2.0 RWD (225/40 R19) on a combination of roads for 0 average miles
The main reason I bought it was because of the price and the wet braking performance on a couple of Tire Reviews' tests. I have a staggered setup (225/40R19 in front and 255/35/R19 in the rear). I can definitely feel it more comfortable than the previous tire that the car came with (Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 in front and Asymmetric 5 in the rear). I haven't had the chance to test deep water, but on dry it has enough grip. It gives a little less feedback than the Goodyear but on highways is stable. can't say anything about the wear yet because I fitted it recently. So far I think I can strongly recommend this tire.

Given 72% while driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI (235/35 R19) on mostly country roads for 6,500 spirited miles
These came on my Mk8 GTI 380 with many mods, which I've put 6500 miles on and I've had all of the following Max/Ultra High Performance Summer Tires on hot hatches or sports coupes. I live in western NC and value handling, dry grip and feedback above wear and comfort. 18-20K is all that I've ever gotten out of a set of skins. That said, I was really disappointed that it didn't come with Contentals and really wanted to hate the Hankooks - but they are a pretty decent tire. I've had Bridgestones and Continentals (Loved), Michelins (Disappointing) most recently, and the Hankooks are just below the Michelins in dry handling and feedback. Breakaway is gradual, with the Hankooks giving you enough feedback to warn you that you're about to trash your new shiny toy. Would I replace them with the new Evo? It's an intriguing question - I've got a little time to do a Lot of research.

If they are a runflat version it will be clearly marked on the sidewall. Hankook call their runflat system HRS.
Given 76% while driving a Honda Civic 1.5T (235/40 R18) on mostly town for 16,000 spirited miles
Replaced my Michelin PS4 with this tire after asking around for a PS4 alternative. It's almost half the price of PS4. I was skeptical at first if it is any good but decided to give it a try.

Dry grip - Less grippy when cold. Need to warm up the tire first for it to grip. More grippy than PS4 in dry.
Wet grip - It's okay but don't expect PS4 level. Hard braking in wet would upset the car slightly. Never had that in PS4 even down to 30% tread.
Road feedback & handling - Not its strongest point. Feedback is numb, handling is more often delayed. TBH it feels more like a slightly higher performance touring tire than a UHP tire.
Wear - Clocked approx 16k km with it so far and the tread still left 70%. Been driving it hard for couple of months. Drove over quite a number of potholes and it never bulge. Very durable.
Comfort - A comfort tire, feel plushie and soft. Quiet at first but gets loud when it starts to wear. Absorbs uneven roads.

Given 70% while driving a Tesla Model 3 LR (235/40 R19) on mostly motorways for 43,500 average miles
Had these tire's fitted as stock from Tesla and they have been really good reliable tires. I don't have anything to compare them to on the Model 3, dry grip has been excellent but I have experienced times on wet roads where the cars stabilization control has taken over. Not sure if this is just an over aggressive stabilization control on the car though. The most impressive thing on this tire is the tread wear, it's just reached 70,000KM and there is still some treadwear left on them, I reckon they can go for another 5,000KM but given their age (5 years), I will get them replaced. Thank you Hankook for a safe 70,000KM's.
