Michelin Primacy 4

The Michelin Primacy 4 is a premium summer touring tire built around comfort, refinement and long-lasting performance. Across both driver feedback and independent tests it stands out for strong dry braking, reassuring wet braking and very low rolling resistance, making it an efficient choice for everyday driving. Owners also praise its quiet, smooth ride and consistent behaviour over high mileages, though it is not positioned as a sporty, sharp-steering option. The main compromises are a high purchase price and some limitations in deep-water aquaplaning and wet-cornering confidence, especially in colder or damp conditions.

Scoring Process
 1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tire tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
 2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
 3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
 4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
 5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
 6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

Very balanced, particularly good in the dry, low wear.
None mentioned.
The Michelin Primacy 4 shines with good results both in the driving maneuvers on dry and wet roads and in the wear test, which is why it is classified as particularly recommendable.

Questions and Answers for the Michelin Primacy 4

Ask a question
September 27, 2017

Can you mail the catalog of primacy 4 or all the tires size for me?

We will be attending the Michelin Primacy 4 launch in mid October 2017, so we will have a full list of Primacy 4 sizes on the website shortly after.
February 13, 2018

When will 15'' sizes be availabe for this tire? Michelin said they would be availabe from january. Have they dropped 15''?

The plan is a phased transition in some sizes from Energy Saver+ to Primacy 4. 2018 sizes are 185/65-15 and 195/65-15 in May/Sept, more to follow in 2019.

Need your help . Can’t decide between Michelin Primacy 4 , Continental Premium 6 and Dunlop SportMaxx RT2. Car: Ford Focus 2008 1.6 Ti-VCT 115hp . 2009-2013 ContiSportContact5 (35000km) . 2013-2018 ContiSportContact5 (30000km). 225/4018 both of them

A very hard question to answer! I would be between the Michelin and Continental Premium Contact 6, but I would probably end up choosing the Michelin Pilot Sport 4!
June 4, 2018

For a 205/55/R16/91V tire size, which is better, Michelin Primacy 4 or Continental Premium contact 5?

They are both comparable tires. The Michelin will have better mileage, the Conti might have slightly better wet grip.
September 1, 2018

Considering both these or Pilot Sport for Golf 1.4 in 205.55 R16. Both seem excellent tires...but not really sure how they compare to each other. I am assuming PS is more sporty, ie stiffer sidewall? Can anyone clearly characterize the differences in "qualities" of these tires in order to aid decision-making? (over and above all the excellent reviews). Thank you!

Your assumption is correct in that the Primacy 4 should be slightly more comfortable, slightly quieter and slightly better mileage, where as the PS4 will feel slightly more sporty.
September 17, 2018

I am thinking about buying this tire, but I don't know which version to choose between: 225/45/R17 91W/Y or the 225/45/R17 94W XL. The XL has better fuel rating and one decibel lower noise level. Would there be any drawbacks if opting for this version? The car is an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0TDI 170HP.

In theory the higher load rating could give you slightly less comfort, but in practice the differences can be very hard to notice so I would suggest that would be the tire I would look at fitting.
October 15, 2018

Following on from the question someone had relating to the XL version being better noise and efficiency ratings that xl version appears more preferable to the 91 rated version. Would the 94 xl version need a higher psi or is it OK to run at the car manufacturers recommended psi (assuming the only psi rating given is for a 91 rated tire)?

It's always best to start running at the manufacturers recommended pressures. Sometimes XL tires with loads like to be around 2 psi higher, but again worth checking.

What is your advice 're replacing 2 tires? Front primacy 3 on my volvo are worn but rears have over 5mm tread left. Do you think primacy 4 would be a good fit to replace the fronts as presumably they have similar characteristics to the primacy 3s. Do you think I should put the newer tire on the rear?

Yes, the Primacy 4 would be a good replacement for the Primacy 3, and the general advice is to put the newer / better tire on the rear of the vehicle to avoid oversteer.
July 30, 2019

Is Primacy 4 an upgrade to the Primacy 3? Reason I ask if because the Primacy 3 is more expensive than the Primacy 4. Making me think that Primacy 3 might actually be better as an overall tire? As I currently got my 2 rear tires changed and bought the Primacy 4 tires. However the Formula One Autocentre fitted the Primacy 3 tires saying that the order of the Primacy 4 is due in another 6 weeks so he suggested to keep the Primacy 3 for the same price? Wondering if I should just keep the Primacy 3 tires now they are fitted.

If you ordered the Primacy 4, I would want those tires. They are a direct replacement for the Primacy 3, and improve on the Primacy 3 in most areas.
August 26, 2019

Living in a small market country like Cyprus where the market is limited to options in "strange" sizes (Lexus IS220d with 225/45/17 & 245/45/17) I have the following decision to take. The Pilot Sport 4 I have on the car now are wearing down (will get roughly around 30K km on them) and I enquired about Evo 3, Conti Premium 6 and F1 A5 (had the A3 before the PS4) and I can only find the front tires (!!!) at the moment. So I'm kinda left with the F1 A3 and the Primacy 4. I liked the F1 A3 a lot but knowing that the F1 A5 is out there I'm a bit bummed. I know one tire is a performance tire and the Primacy 4 is a touring tire and I'm not really driving the car on sport mode so I'm leaning towards the Primacy 4. Price for the Goodyear should be a bit cheaper (around €530 compared to €580 for the Primacy 4). Any opinion to get me over the line? :) Thank you.

Without knowing your market it is very difficult for me to recommend anything else, especially as you really seem to know your tires! The extra purchase price of the Prim4 should be offset by the extra mileage, but the Asymmetric 3 will likely be the grippier tire overall.
January 6, 2020

Rear primacy 3 XL on my BMW 520D are worn (after 12k mileage) but Fronts have over 5mm tread left. Do you think primacy 4 would be a good fit to replace the rear? How do primacy 4 perform on grip as compared with PS4? Usually I drive within speed limits. Sometime 80 to 90mph

Primacy 4 is the obviously replacement for the 3, it's improved slightly in almost all categories. Dry and wet grip should be broadly similar to the Pilot Sport 4, but they won't handle as nicely.
August 18, 2020

I have a VW Golf 1.4 Tsi 90kw (2015) came factory fitted with Dunlop Sport BluResponse 205/55 16 91V. Generally run Michelin tires on my cars. I’m looking at the Primacy 4 as all round replacements, historical spinal injuries/surgery mean comfort is a priority nowadays, in your recent test the Primacy 4 rated highly on subjective comfort. However, in the video it was listed as a 91H, so my quandary is, would the 91H provide slightly improved subjective comfort over a 91V? Every little helps. . . Being a 90kw model, both VW and Michelin have recommended 91H or higher for 205/55 16 wheels.

In that size, the 91H and 91V tires are the same construction, so it wouldn't make a difference.
February 5, 2021

How come New Michelin Primacy 4 comes with only 6.5mm tread depth? Is that not a bit low and do some Primacy 4 come with 8mm? If so, how come and what ones do?

I'm not sure if some sizes come with higher tread depth, potentially SUV sizes might, however the Primacy 4 starting around 7mm is normal, and should still out-wear almost any other tire on the market.
November 8, 2020

Can anyone say please, primacy 4 205/55/r16 in which country this model makes it? I've seen articles that it might be in germany/russia/poland. Can anyone help me please?

It can also depend what market you are buying the Primacy 4 in, I would suggest checking with a local tire seller to see w where their stock is from.
January 22, 2021

Does the Primacy 4 offer good MPG and levels of comfort?

Yes, the Primacy 4 is known for low fuel use, there is a new version, the e.Primacy due out soon which will improve that further.
July 13, 2021

The weight in the label scores are not accurate.... 225/45/R18 ST 95W XL tires came 11.2kg instead of 9.6 kg.... screwed up my wheels weight calculation. I thought I was getting a set of lighter wheels but now they ended up being 1.5kg heavier per weight.

Thank you, I'll look into this.
July 25, 2021

Looking for new tires for an eco hybrid and see that there are several Primacy 4 options. What is the difference between a normal Primacy 4 and the S1 variant. Looking at tire retailers they are rated better for fuel and noise

I would be looking at the Michelin e.Primacy instead!
August 17, 2021

Which is better primacy 3 , or, pilot sport 3 for Bmw 270/40/19and 245/45/19. Thanks

Both tires are quite old and I've not tested either, so I'm afraid I don't know!
September 9, 2021

I see that there is 3 version of the same tire - primacy 4 , primacy 4 S1 and primacy 4 S2. Does anyone test the difference or know, what it is. On paper looks huge - fuel consumption is from rating C to A.

I would email Michelin on this one as S1 is a little ambiguous, sorry.
February 21, 2022

I do enjoy pushing my car a little bit while driving sometimes. Is it better to go for PS4 or Primacy4? Do PS4 offer much comfort compare to Primacy for touring? What is the pro & con of getting either tires?

The Pilot SPORT 4 is the sportier of the two tires, which means there is slightly reduced comfort when compared to the primacy 4.
September 20, 2022

Please advise air pressure for Michelin Primacy 4+ 225/45R17. Driving a Lexus IS200t.

The tire pressure is governed by the vehicle, the data should be displayed in your owner's manual or in the door shut of the drivers door.

I fitted michelin primacy 4 s1 225 45 r17 s1 XL, on a Fiat tipo 1.3 diesel Sedan. My priority is low consumption, comfort and low noise. In your opinion, did I make a good choice?

The Primacy 4 is an excellent all round tire, you should be happy with your purchase.
May 31, 2025

what is the treadwear number please?

It can vary based on size, but the 225/40 R18 Primacy 4+ I tested was a 340.

Review Summary

Based on 154 user reviews

Across 154 reviews, the Michelin Primacy 4 is praised mainly for comfort, low noise, and long tread life, with many noting strong dry braking and stable wet performance even as the tire wears. High-scoring owners frequently highlight quiet cruising and consistent performance over high mileages. However, a noticeable minority report vague steering/floaty feel (especially in cold/damp or at higher speeds), some aquaplaning or reduced wet cornering confidence, and rising noise as the tire wears; price is also a common complaint. Overall sentiment is positive, positioning the Primacy 4 as a comfortable, durable touring tire rather than a sporty choice.

Strengths
 • Ride comfort
 • Low noise (especially when new)
 • Long tread life/durability
 • Strong dry grip and braking
 • Predictable handling
 • Good wet braking/aquaplaning control
Areas for Improvement
 • Vague steering/floaty feel
 • Reduced wet grip in cold/damp conditions
 • Noise increases with wear
 • Crosswind/rut sensitivity
 • High price

Given 84% while driving a Skoda Superb MK3 (2015 Present) (135/45 R18) on mostly town for 4,000 easy going miles
This is an update of my previous experience with the Michelin Primacy 4+ on my Skoda Superb series 3.

I have reported on numerous times to a Skoda dealer that the car judgers at low speakers when on turning the steering wheel and the wheels can bounce when load applied.

Dealer reports no issues with the car.

Most probably found the problem : my cars drive mode is always on ( traction control ) I go through the drive menu and turn the traction control off and the problem appears to go away.

These tires perform very well and certainly would purchase again but although a summer tire they are not really suited to Southern European temperatures as a permanent fitment due to tire compounds.

I run these for for 4 years and 50k miles. While they are expensive to buy, they do last a long time and are consistent throughout their lifespan. Great all around handling and especially good at road noise and comfort. I replaced these with Primacy 5 and so far they are at least as good!

Given 77% while driving a Audi Q5 (235/55 R19) on mostly town for 8,500 easy going miles
Actually I have Michelin Primacy 4 235/55 R19 105W XL MO
+ rim protector (at 8 inch wheel no need to worry about scratching the disks)
+ quiet at good road
+ not floaty at hot weather
+ soft but strong sidewall
++ fuel consumption on my dashboard
++ treadwear 15000 km/per 1 mm
- I don't want to drive fast on a wet road at 2 tons car (previously had Goodyear EfficientGrip 2 it is mush more better, just another level on a wet road)
- price of a new set

Given 59% while driving a Renault Austral Full hybrid (235/45 R20) on mostly town for 7,000 average miles
Performance on damp roads is poor and falls off the cliff edge when it’s cold outside. I appreciate they’re summer tires but I’ve never had such notable drops in performance in all the summer tires I’ve ever had on cars. The tires are good when the weather is warm, but perform like cheap budget tires when cold and damp and I lose all confidence in them. They came new with the car as standard but I can’t wait to change them out. Really disappointed.

Given 91% while driving a Renault Scenic (225/45 R17) on mostly motorways for 22,000 average miles
very good tires and good handeling for a tall mpv. Did some fast-ish mountain road with it and it was holding very well in the corners. Now at the middle/end of its life i feel like they get very noisy and a bit hard. Its not as comfortable i would like to be

Given 96% while driving a Peugeot 208 1.5 BlueHDi (185/65 R15) on a combination of roads for 40,000 spirited miles
This is the second set of Primacy 4 that I used.

In the dry, it is outstanding. Whether turning, accelarating or braking the tire always delivers maximum grip. What is even more impressive though is the grip it has when WORN. After 60,000km, even with the tread at 3.6mm left, it still brakes and stops the car like a charm. This is the reason I will opt for them again and again.

In the wet, it is very very good, especially when new. When worn, it still performs very well. As for aquaplanning, I don't really know as I haven't been through more than 5mm of water at a great speed, but down the highway at 90km/h and heavy rain there was no problem whatsoever. Now that they are worn, I don't really know.

The feedback is more than satisfying for my non-expert mind as well as the handling.

Comfort is a bit above average in my opinion. I have had experience with BF Goodrich g-grip tires, which set the standard for me as concerns comfort. The Michelin Primacy 4 is acceptable in this field.

Wear.......well, the tire loses 0.5mm (yes, half a millimeter) of tread for every 10,000km. When new, the tread was at 6.8mm and now, after 60,000km, it is at 3.6mm. In my book, this is exceptional performance and money well-spent for a tire that has no drawback, keeps my family safe and remains strong even towards the end of its life. Well done, Michelin.

Buy again? Oh, hell yeah!

You can have a look here if you want to see for yourself what they look like now, after 60,000km

Given 60% while driving a Lexus CT200h (225/45 R17) on mostly motorways for 0 easy going miles
My primacy 4 have severe side wall cracking and the tire is only 2 years old, I've driven the car and not hit a pot hole or any curbs, for the price at around £140 a tire I am disappointed especially as my tire still has 5mm tread

Good tires for all day motoring, with predictable grip and good comfort.

Given 74% while driving a Hyundai i30 (205/55 R16) on a combination of roads for 20,000 average miles
I saw many excited reviews about primacy4 and I thought I 've found the best tire. It is not the best. Sometimes it isn't even good. I felt many times, even though I wasn't driving fast enough, that the tire was loosing road contact. I get the feeling that if I try to test it's handling limits, I will end up on the edge of the road.

Given 83% while driving a Mazda 6 (225/50 R18) on a combination of roads for 54,000 average miles
Owned this tire since early 2022 and i clocked 53k km on this tire. I think it deserve a review from me

I usually drove my car to work, pick up my kid and once a yr i will travel for a roadtrip which is ard 1k km distance

For normal city drive whether is wet or drive, the grip is excellent, no complain and as long is below 110km/h i think this tire is great.

My only complain is when im travelling high speed during my road trip, my car seems floaty. Not sure is it because or my suspension , it just feel floaty .

I think i must praise abt this tire, after 3yrs n 53k km mileage, the tread is still alot.

Given 60% while driving a Hyundai i30 (225/45 R17) on mostly motorways for 2,500 easy going miles
The dry grip is okay for someone that drives in normal and relaxing style. Havent really properly pushed it in wet driving, but on low speeds it wasnt anything wrong to note. Comfort over bumps is adequate considering the low profile rims. Wear is too early to assess.

The problem for me is the noise they make. On smooth roads it's perfectly fine, but even on little rougher asphalt the resonating noise sometimes can be unbearable. This is of course even more noticeable on highway speeds. I don't know if it's the car making that or not, but to me it sounds really bad. Note that they are factory equipped on a 2024 i30 Facelift model.

Given 74% while driving a Toyota Yaris Mk4 Hybrid 1.5 (XP210, M15A FXE) (185/65 R15) on a combination of roads for 4,000 spirited miles
Got 4 of these for a bargain due to ATS Euromaster offer and have had them for a few thousand miles so far.
Far better grip than the Triangle tires previously on the car. Acceleration, Braking and Cornering grip is superb in the dry, but in the wet, especially cornering grip, is surprisingly sub-par with some unexpected understeer on e.g. roundabouts in the wet and also on dry recently salted roads. Was quite surprised by that as Hankook Ventus and Goodyear Efficientgrip were much better and I expected similar from a top-tier brand like Michelin. Economy and NVH are on par with a premium tire, good but not mindblowing. Will be interesting to see how they wear over time as either they start off with a slightly lower tread depth than other tires I've used or they are wearing down quickly!
