225/50 18 Tire Review Highlights

Michelin CrossClimate 2 rated 85% while driving a BMW BMW X1
Driving on a combination of roads for 2000 easy going miles
Had to wait 6 years before I had to replace the original tires on my car, as I don't do a high mileage per year. Very expensive compared to the prices given on this page - £900 for a full set.
What a difference, at last I felt as if I was in control of the car. The grip in the wet is great as well as in the dry and quiet too.
Always preferred Michelin since I changed to them on my bicycle in the 1950's, yes I'm that old. Been motoring since 1964 and had numerous cars so I think I know something.

Bridgestone Turanza T005 rated 69% while driving a BMW X1 X Drive
Driving on mostly town for 15000 average miles
Good tire. I would definitely buy it again if it was on sale but I feel like for the price. It doesn't last long. My car is mainly forward wheel drive and the front ones lasted like 15k miles.. the back will probably last up to 20k miles.

Kumho WinterCraft Ice rated 76% while driving a Hyundai Genesis Coupe V6
Driving on mostly country roads for 1500 spirited miles
Tread pattern on this tire is directional, so 2 are being used on rear axle only. Car is a fairly heavy rwd with a limited slip diff, so the tires get some help. Grip is good in snow. Tires are composed when powered through rutted, hilly b-roads. Tires can be composed when navigating uphill on snow-covered roads.

However, it seems the Wi31 have a tendency to allow snap oversteer when approaching WoT. The slide itself is predictable and possible to reel in.

In general: grip levels are good, but once lost, the tire struggles to respond under continued throttle.

No comment on ice as there are no studs installed on the tires. Wear is noticeable outside of snow. Comfort is not an issue, nor is it a real strength.

This (Wintercraft Wi31) is a fairly old model, and you should be able to find discounts. It's important to make sure you check the manufacture year of your tire (XXYY) -> XX = week of manufacture, YY = year of manufacture. You may not want a "new" tire that is in reality a year or two old, since it means it sat in a warehouse in unknown conditions for a long time!

Goodride All Season Elite Z 401 rated 86% while driving a BMW 118d M Sport
Driving on a combination of roads for 10000 easy going miles
Sporty driving style, the tire performs excellently in any situation. Good grip on wet and dry surfaces, decent behavior on snow or ice, however on par with renowned tires.

Michelin Primacy 4 rated 83% while driving a Lexus GS
Driving on mostly town for 1000 easy going miles
Complete set installed in April 2024. For now, they feel much quieter and more comfortable than the dunlop sp050. We see how it behaves over time.

Falken EUROWINTER HS02 Pro rated 94% while driving a Toyota CHR Hybrid
Driving on mostly town for 3000 average miles
After my first winter of driving on them I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. It snowed quite a bit here compared to other years and despite the model not reviewing that well in snow conditions, it performed admirably, even in deeper snow. What really impressed me however was its dry and wet performance, it genuinely felt like a summer tire no matter how cold it got.

Michelin CrossClimate 2 rated 95% while driving a BMW 320d GT
Driving on mostly country roads for 2000 spirited miles
I read a lot of reviews before changing from the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5. I have always been impressed with the Goodyears; however, residing as I do in the country, historically I have previously changed to full winters late autumn, yet have never done so for this car. This has always left me feeling vulnerable in the case of snow.

So, late 2023, the decision is, a set of winters or try the Cross Climate 2's. With an asymmetric wheel set up, this meant Cross Climate 2's on the front and the CC2 SUV version on the rear. I was assured that they are the same tire, so this was the decision.

I went ahead nervous that an excellently handling and fun to drive car would be compromised by an all season, compromise tire. Driving out of the tire shop, I was worried. With the release agent still not worn off, the previously quite weighty steering was light. Very light. Umm. Not sure. 150 miles in the steering was still much lighter than with the Goodyear Ass. but in a refined, pleasant way. In fact, it was better. It was easier to position the car. So was the noise. The Goodyears are not noisy, but the quietness of the CC2's was noticeable.

The CC2's are also more comfortable, however not through soggy sidewalls that lean and move through corners, just more comfortable.

3 months in and I am thrilled by the choice. Even in the heavy rains of this spring grip has been exemplary. Dry handling and braking are excellent. As someone who was very unsure of moving from a performance summer tire to the all season Cross Climate 2's, so far I would thoroughly recommend the change. I will now wait to see how they perform in really hot weather.

Dunlop Sport Maxx 050 Plus rated 49% while driving a Toyota Innova
Driving on a combination of roads for 3000 average miles
These tires come fitted from factory. I have never had a very good experience with dunlop tires, but I decided to stick with them since tires are very expensive these days. They are TERRIBLE. I have lost grip on uneven surface, even when it's dry. I dont know why they get such a high score here. In the wet they're also not great. They just dont inspire confidence. And the worst thing is comfort. They are extremely noisy even when new, and they're stiff, not in a good way. I know they are UHP tires, but they seriously cannot compare to michelin PS4, continental MC6, or even bridgestone potenza RE050 that I've had in the past. No, it's not the car itself that's causing all those issues. I used to have a set of dunlops that came with my mercedes w211, but I dont remember the model, and they bulged when I hit a small pothole, so I was hoping they had improved their tires over the years, but I guess I was hoping too much. I will still stick with these at least until they have 50% of tread left since the car itself is not exactly sporty, but for those who are considering replacing their tires with these, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Three A Farroad FRD 26 rated 83% while driving a Toyota Unknown
Driving on mostly town for 15000 average miles
For budget tire this is the best. Quiet and gripping in both wet n dry are good. But wear is little too fast especially after 50% in use. Both sidewall will worn faster. And mechanic said a bit pumping when get into balancing machine make it hard to get perfect balance when after 50% using. Otherwise all good.

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 3 rated 76% while driving a Peugeot 3008 GT line 2.0 Blue HDI
Driving on mostly country roads for 20000 spirited miles
Excellent tires, superb in the wet, cold weather bias out weights weaknesses in higher temperatures. I have used these tires previously on a Skoda yeti size 225 55 17, highly recommended.

Falken Azenis FK520 rated 97% while driving a Toyota CHR Hybrid
Driving on mostly town for 3000 average miles
Had them fitted for the past 7 months and they're bloody amazing. Was kind of reluctant to put on a "performance" tire on a hybrid daily driver but I don't regret the decision at all. Traction control barely kicks in anymore, the braking and the grip while cornering is amazing and they don't seem to have worn at all almost.

Nexen N Fera SU4 rated 93% while driving a Volvo v70 D5
Driving on a combination of roads for 18000 average miles
After reading the reviews I decided to buy this tire and I am extremely happy with the choice. The tire feels very grippy, wet handling is also very manageable. The only negative thing is about my choice in tire size, as now I would like a wider tire. However, given the 225 width its still a very confidence giving tire.
