235/45 18 Tire Review Highlights

Michelin e.Primacy rated 57% while driving a Tesla 2024 Model 3 RWD
Driving on mostly town for 15000 average miles
I live on a hill. The only road out of my house goes downhill. On rainy days, I have to be extremely cautious on this road. At very low speeds, 10–20 km/h, if I lift my foot off the accelerator, I can feel the car sliding slightly downhill, and the regenerative braking in my Model 3 deactivates. This results in an unpleasant sensation of the car skidding downwards for a few centimeters/half a second.

The same thing happens on sharp turns and roundabouts when it's wet. Even without pressing much on the accelerator, the car slides (this can easily happen at just 10 or 20 km/h). In city traffic on wet streets, I take extra precautions and leave a greater distance from the car in front, because if I need to brake moderately (for example at 40 km/h), the car slides about half a meter further. These low-speed situations on wet surfaces are very frequent.

On highways or open roads at 100 or 120 km/h, I haven’t experienced these problems, but even so, I don’t feel confident when it rains.

None of these issues happen in dry conditions BTW. It’s a shame because the e.Primacy in other aspects is ok for normal driving and even great (not too noisy, good comfort), but due to its serious issues on wet surfaces, I will replace them very soon, probably before they reach the end of its lifespan. It's a matter of safety.

Nokian Remedy WRG5 rated 86% while driving a Volvo S60 2.0T
Driving on mostly town for 2000 spirited miles
Great traction in rain and snow, super confidence inspiring. Braking in snow and ice is good too. Braking on very wet pavement isn’t the best but it doesn’t rain often here so it doesn’t bother me too much. Very predictable dry handling and not mushy like other all weathers. Good feedback on the grip limit.

Hankook Kinergy 4S2 rated 26% while driving a Tesla Model 3 LR
Driving on a combination of roads for 27000 average miles
I bought these tires after having driven with Michelin CrossClimate on my TM3 LR AWD. I drove 85,000 km on the Michelin, and it was a great tire. These Hankook tires were ranked first alongside the Michelin CrossClimate 2, where Michelin performed better in snow than in rain (where Hankook was best). And since there is more rain than snow in Denmark, this seemed like the obvious choice.

It turned out I was terribly wrong. They are not very good tires. They are decent in dry conditions, but in wet and snowy conditions, they are terrible. It feels like there is no grip or feedback. We took them on a ski trip, and there were multiple moments when the car felt like it was slipping for no reason. In the rain, when accelerating hard, they struggle to maintain traction. This was NEVER a problem with Michelin.

I have now driven approximately 35,000 km on them, and they will need to be replaced within the next 5,000–10,000 km. Do not buy these Hankook tires unless you want to gamble with your safety!

Continental PremiumContact 7 rated 94% while driving a Hyundai Kona electric
Driving on a combination of roads for 5000 spirited miles
With the 395Nm FWD EV, this tire can put down most of the torque, lowering the tire spin speed from 50 to about 35km/h compared to Michelin Pilot Sport 4. While it doesn't give the best road feedback it is a daily commuter tire that has buckets of grip in any condition.

Kumho Ecsta KU39 rated 99% while driving a Alfa Romeo Brera TBi
Driving on a combination of roads for 30000 average miles
I bought this tires because of the reviews I read comparing to the price. The previous were Continental Contact 5 which costed double price at the time.
Exceptional handling in dry and almost the same in wet. It will not wear visibly but I think it starts to show its age in 4 maybe 5 years!

Pirelli Powergy rated 83% while driving a Tesla Model 3 standard plus
Driving on mostly town for 18640 spirited miles
Second best tire I've ever driven on, after Michelin Pilot Sport 4.
Dry grip was exceptional, almost as good as the Michelins. Under normal driving conditions, they're outstanding. It was only if I pushed them really hard did I noticed they were just a smidge less grippy than the Michelins, but they're very close.
Wet traction was pretty good, they were a bit easier to deliberately slide my Tesla with on wet roads than the Michelins, not dramatically so.
Once the tread wore a bit, probably in the last 5000kms, on a wet, smooth road, it was easy to break traction and slide them with the Tesla. But otherwise, they were still safe in the wet when worn. In the dry, they were still at about 80% of what they were new.
Pretty quiet, comfortable too.
Lasted 30,000kms which very good for me.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 rated 60% while driving a Honda Clarity Plug in Hybrid
Driving on a combination of roads for 8000 easy going miles
I have had these Nokians on both my Honda and my Mercedes, and I don't think I would get them again. I do live in the woods of Quebec Canada, so we put snow tires through their paces here. If there is any snow build up at all, the Honda can't make it up hills, and we need to have the 4matic Mercedes to get to work. Now with that car having these tires it's clear that the tire lacks grip on heavy snow or any ice. The Hankooks I had previously on the Mercedes were better in almost all situations.

Driving on a combination of roads for 9700 easy going miles
Living in a country where it rains a lot, wet grip is very decent! Never had an issue nor any concerns. Highway driving in heavy and very heavy rain is also a breeze and leaves me no concerns. Had passed a few “puddles” with highway speed and it fared very well with resisting to the aquaplaning.

Accelera PHI R rated 40% while driving a BMW 135i
Driving on mostly motorways for 20000 spirited miles
In the dry, these tires do the job. But they do the job about as well as an LS388, and on my 380bhp 135i, every corner turns into how well can I drift challenge.

I bought these primarily as the car is only used for motorway trips to my other half’s house, Wigan - York, and so burning up a nice set of PS4’s for motorway and the (very) occasional hard driving sessions, it made sense to purchase cheap tires to eat up motorway miles. Car does not go to work.

Wet grip:
Where do I get started.

135i, 380bhp, LSD, literally spins 6th gear in the wet. Even 10% throttle kicks the back end out into a slide, genuinely should not be sold these tires on just how terrible the wet grip is. Do not purchase if you enjoy being alive.

I'm trepeat this coming week for my Suzuki Kizashi. Can't stress enough how good this tires are. I usually step in to 70mph with curves and hills, couldn't be happier.

Petlas Velox Sport PT741 rated 87% while driving a Ford Mondeo Titanium 2.0 TCDI
Driving on a combination of roads for 2500 spirited miles
Excellent tire for hot/dry, stable at speed, good feedback excellent handling. Not for liw temperatures. Otherwise for summer, heavier/more powerfull vehicles best buy for enthusiastic sporty drivers.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 rated 64% while driving a BMW 320 d
Driving on mostly motorways for 19250 spirited miles
Was OK for the first 28-30.000 kilometers but then incredibly hardened with low temperatures. Steering was almost impossible, the car always wants to go straight.
